The Chico Skatepark Expansion is HAPPENING!
Our non-profit, Chico Skatepark Solutions, has raised $80,000 to date! Chico Area Recreation Department (CARD) has already invested $65,000 for the prelim plans, detailed blue prints, and permits.  CARD recently committed another $200,000 to see the expansion happen.
THANK YOU to all of you who have attended Sierra Nevada Big Room Fundraisers, bought clothes at our Lulu's Outlet Sale, bought Fix Chico Skatepark shirts or Klean Kanteens, bought Burrittos or Pizza at our fundraisers....Thank you to our 100+ volunteers over the past two years, to all of you who attended board meetings, and to our amazing donors who believe in making Chico a great place to skate.  The Chico Skatepark Solutions committee has been AMAZING and together we MADE THIS HAPPEN!

Next Steps:  Chico Skatepark Solutions will be holding a two day Lulu's Outlet Sale in late September.  Money from that fundraiser will potentially be utilized for:  Grand Opening, Clean Up at the Current Park (graffiti, lights, etc), getting serious about building at DeGarmo, and talking with EBHB about a skatepark being part of their master plan!  Chico Skatepark Solutions Board will ultimately make the decisions on these possible directions.

For now we will celebrate this great skateboarding accomplishment.  Chico is going to be a place to come to skate!

Bidwell Park and Playground Commission Meeting

The Bidwell Park and Playground Commission meeting in April was a bit disappointing, but not a total loss....  The commission had an opportunity to do the right thing for the skateboard community and the city and they missed it.  The Chico Skatepark is NOT a neighborhood park, it is a COMMUNITY PARK.  It is the ONLY skatepark for Chico's 100,000 people, meaning the community uses it, not just a neighborhood.  All that was asked of the commission was to make the park designation change to a Community Park, allowing us to go to the city council and request Community Park Funds, but they instead asked us to wait for the new NEXUS Study.

On a positive note, we had 80-90 people from the community out to support the skatepark with beautifully made signs.  Check out this clip:

Ann Willmann (CARD GM) and Jan Sneed (CARD Board Member) both approached us after the meeting with a positive message:  We are moving forward with the skatepark!  Our next meeting takes place at the CARD Vallombrosa Ave facility on May 18th @7PM.  In this meeting we hope to hear clearly the plan of action as we continue to aim for the skatepark expansion to be breaking ground by August.  CARD has discussed paying for the remainder of the skatepark expansion with an agreement from the city that once the NEXUS Study takes place and we can access the Community Park fund, CARD would be reimbursed.

Where We Are in the Skatepark Expansion Process

WHERE WE ARE: CARD initially approved $20,000 to move forward with Grindline Skateparks, who has created the drawings for our expansion. CARD then approved $65,000 that will get us through all of the permits, constructions designs, and PRE-building expenses. From there, the park will likely cost another $200,000. CARD will be asking the city to help with these funds, using New Parks Money. That money is being earmarked for other projects including the swim facilities and more, but our request is minuscule in comparison. WHEN the city is asked to help with these costs, it will be imperative that we show up in MASS numbers with signs and skateboards.... 100+ would be GREAT. 300 would be even better!

OUR WORK: Chico Skatepark Solutions has raised $80,000 with nine fundraisers....two Big Room Events, Fix Chico Skatepark Shirts, Skate Comp, Woodstock, Chipotle, shirts sold by, Klean Kanteen, and the Lulu's Outlet Sale!

Meetings: We will continue to attend EVERY CARD meeting on the third Thursday of the month. Please be part of this 1X per month (15 minute) commitment if you are at all able to do so. We will also meet at Woodstocks 1X per month for 60 minutes beginning in September. These meetings will primarily focus on fundraising and the Big Room event, but will also be for communication and brainstorming as we move forward. If you have anyone who may be interested in helping us expand the park, PLEASE bring them in. We need the help.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed thus far by attending events, donations, attending CARD meetings, or just keeping the door open. This is happening

CARD Agenda for the Expansion

Chico Skatepark Solutions was on the Chico Area Recreation District (CARD) agenda March 17th. We presented and showed a slideshow of the February 6th Humboldt Ave Skate Event where we, along with CARD and Skate MVMT, offered lessons, held demos, a competition, and over 200 people solid for over three hours of a flawless six hour skate event with booths, a raffle, and we raised $1000. We also presented about the February 20th Sierra Nevada Big Room fundraiser where we had dinner, a live auction, silent auction, a raffle, and SOLD OUT with 320 people and raised over $20,000. We showed repeated images of the grass area adjacent to the skatepark being MIS-used by non-skaters. We then had a computer glitch and could not show the video we showed in the Big Room of Nor Cal skaters being interviewed and asked: Why do you love skateboarding? and Why is the skatepark expansion a good thing? We emailed this one to each board member instead. Later in the night, board member Jan Sneed stated, “I am in awe of the skatepark group’s efforts and fundraising.” Board member Michael Worley stated, “I too am in awe of Chico Skatepark Solutions. If any group of people want us to make a change, they should take lessons from the skatepark group.” Board member Bob Malowney followed up with, “Your group is really the gold star as far as we are concerned.” Jan Sneed stated in a positive tone, “You also have that pit bull approach with not going away.” CARD General Manager, Ann Willmann stated, “Grindline Skateparks will be here at the beginning of next month to meet with the people who have been working so hard on this and to begin initial concept designs.” We are on our way.

Our Fundraising Efforts Surpass Expectations

Chico Skatepark Solutions has raised $24,000 through shirts, the February 6th skateboarding comp, and February 20th Sierra Nevada Big Room Fundraiser. The local communities have been hugely supportive. This information was presented at the CARD (Chico Area Recreation District) Board Meeting on March 17th.  CARD has approved $5000 towards design and in April, Grindline Skateparks will be meeting with us to start concept design sketches!

Skatepark Event a Huge Success!

We had over 250 people in the skatepark for over 3 hours straight of the six hour event, enjoying a flawless day of skateboarding! Bryan Houston said, "Show me a soccer field that can do that!" In the 6 hours total of the event we likely saw over 400 people. Chico loves skateboarding and our community deserves a decent park! Thank you to all of those who showed up and were part of the SOLUTION! My biggest thanks goes to the crew Skate Mvmt. The event was also featured on the front page of the Chico ER today.

MISSION: Chico Skatepark Solutions is a grassroots organization developed by local Chico citizens who are devoted to increasing positive places for skateboarders to skate in our community.

VISION: Chico has a population of almost 90,000 people, but the Chico skatepark (Humboldt Avenue Skatepark) pales in comparison to parks in much smaller surrounding communities such as Corning, Oroville, and soon Live Oak. The Chico skatepark is built for beginning skaters and due to the creek side location, low flow of drive through traffic and the grass area adjacent to the park, it has become a draw for drug use, drinking, and sleeping by non-skaters. Chico Skatepark Solutions has a vision of removing the grass area and seating in the park, replacing it with intermediate and advanced skatepark designs that will draw in both adult and family skaters, and establishing the park as a place to skateboard. Additionally, Chico Skatepark Solutions is interested in helping the city to build additional skateparks. It is estimated that there should be one skatepark for every 25,000 people. Chico has one underbuilt park for 90,000 people. It is time for change!

ABOUT US: Chico Skatepark Solutions is made up teachers, administrators, lawyers, grant writers, auto mechanics, photographers, and more. Many of us are skaters or have skateboarding children, but others are simply involved because it is the right thing for Chico.
